AUCKLAND (Reuters) - Swiss challengers Alinghi outsailed holders Team New Zealand to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the America's Cup on Tuesday and move within two races of becoming the first European team to win sport's oldest trophy.
Alinghi, led by former New Zealand skipper Russell Coutts and tactician Brad Butterworth, outfoxed their younger and less experienced rivals at the start and led through to the finish to win race three of the best-of-nine series by 23 seconds.
Team New Zealand won the America's Cup in 1995 and became the first non-U.S. team to successfully defend it in 2000, but now face an almost impossible task against Swiss biotechnology billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli's Alinghi.
